THESE TRYING TIMES

The coronavirus (COVID-19) is spreading and causing devastation, including unprecedented fatalities across the globe. We’re all in this together and need to do everything possible to arrest and diminish its spread. This includes following the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for hand washing and social distancing.

Coronavirus(es), as first described in 1931, is a group of related viruses that cause diseases in mammals, birds, and humans. This virus causes respiratory tract (lung) infections that can be mild such as cases of the common cold and then others that can be deadly (SARS, MERS, and COVID-19). Currently, the leading infectious disease in the group and the world at large is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) [Coronavirus Disease 2019, n.d.]. The disease was first identified in 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei, China, and has since spread globally, resulting in what we now know as the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Lesser symptoms, like sore throat and diarrhea, could also occur [ECDC, 2020].

The virus is primarily spread through close contact with infected persons and via respiratory droplets produced when people cough or sneeze. This virus is not airborne but can also spread when one touches a contaminated surface and their face. The virus also sustains the ability to live on surfaces for 72 hours. Symptoms, sadly, do not appear until after an incubation period of 14 days [2019-20 coronavirus pandemic, n.d.]. The elderly, as well as those with prior medical complications, are more susceptible to contracting the COVID-19.

Some of the measures to avoid getting infected (which also have been promoted and directed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as federal, state, and local governments) include the act of social distancing. Social distancing means staying home and away from the proximity of dense areas, which will go a long way to reduce the rate of transmission drastically. COVID-19 in itself doesn’t move; therefore, if people avoid crowded events in order to limit their mobility and physical interaction with each other by six (6) feet or more; then there is a high probability of arresting and mitigating the spread, and contain COVID-19 [WHO, 2020]. Also, covering the mouth when sneezing is very critical. Subsequently, it is highly recommended that individuals stay away from sick persons and those whose immune system has been compromised. In addition to the above, frequent and thorough washing of hands is a third major precaution. And all nations have been advised to train, educate and create the necessary awareness as one-third of the world’s countries are battling the virus [WHO, 2020].

To that end, we are advised to refrain from touching our faces and picking our noses; the virus cannot thrive until it is inside the body. Other corrective measures like ensuring proper ventilation and keeping an appropriate distance from sick persons are encouraged to ensure containment.

In summary, the COVID-19 is spreading and causing devastation, including unprecedented fatalities across the globe. Please, it’s critical you adhere to your local government’s WARNING, relating to the COVID-19. Note: We are all in this together and need to do everything possible to arrest and diminish its spread. This include following the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for hand washing and social distancing. As many nations approach a complete lockdown due to the ravaging pandemic, we are encouraged to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary traveling and gatherings, and practice good personal hygiene until this plague passes. We all need to stay well and be alive to tell the story to our children and grandchildren — relating to the pandemic and scare of the 21st Century. Last, but not least, we need to remain calm and use our heads, especially during these trying times.
